Reigning champ cruises through first match: Tuesday, April 4, 2006

Reigning men’s singles champion Shane Globits strolled through his opening game at the Australian Open bowls tournament in Melbourne this morning (4/4).

Globits defeated Victorian qualifier Ian Smith in straight sets 8-6, 11-2 at the Darebin International Sports Centre.

The 29-year-old Gold Coast-based bowler had the luxury of a bye in the first round and now plays Melbourne-based Neville Brown in a third round encounter this afternoon.

Fellow Queenslander Mark Casey also made light work of his first game. The 2006 Commonwealth Games triples gold medalist beat Melbourne qualifier Nick West 13-2, 10-3.

defeated Barrie Close of Victoria in straight sets 11-5, 8-4.

Lindbeck, who had the luxury of a bye in the first round, now plays top NSW bowler Tom Ellem in a third round encounter this afternoon. He is the only ACT bowler remaining in the men’s singles draw.

Western Australian bowler David Opie also continued his charge at the singles title.

The Hilton Park Bowls Club member beat Commonwealth Games triples gold medallist Bill Cornehls in straight sets 8-5, 8-8.

A qualifier in the event, Opie now plays South Australian Gary Thompson in a third round encounter this afternoon.

Action in the $100,000 Australian Open continues throughout today with rounds of the women’s singles, pairs and triples and the men’s singles and pairs.
