Globits & Glasson out of Open: Thursday, April 6, 2006

Both the No.1 and No.3 seeds have been bundled out of the blue-ribbon men’s singles event at the Australian Open bowls tournament.

Defending champion and top seed Shane Globits and reigning world singles champion Steve Glasson were beaten in quarter-finals at the Darebin International Sports Centre in Melbourne this evening (6/4).

In major upsets, Western Australian Russell Hughes defeated Glasson 12-2, 3-11, 2-1, and NSW bowler Leif Selby beat Globits 9-6, 2-12, 2-1.

Hughes, who plays for the Cockburn Bowling Club, beat the experienced international in a nail biting tie-breaker.

In the opening set, Perth-based Hughes trounced the nine-time Australian indoor singles champion to win the set by an impressive ten shots.

With a count of four on the first end of the second set Glasson took control before running away with the set 11-3 pushing the game into a sudden-death shoot-out.

Despite having all the momentum Glasson couldn’t convert on the final end giving Hughes the match 12-2, 3-11, 2-1.

South Australian Gary Thompson also advanced to the semi-finals with a straight sets victory over New Zealand international Richard Girvan.

The South Australian grabbed a 5-0 lead after two ends of the opening set and then survived a late challenge from Girvan to take the set 7-6.

In the second, Thompson out-gunned the Kiwi, picking up three counts of three shots before taking the set with a comfortable 12-1 scoreline.

Thompson will play Selby in the first semi-final. The second semi-final is between Hughes and New Zealand’s Russell Meyer after the Kiwi beat former Hong Kong international Mark McMahon 10-7, 4-9, 2-0.

The semi-finals of the men’s singles will be played at 2.00pm and 4.00pm tomorrow (Friday 7 April) and highlights will be screened on ABC TV at approximately 11.00pm (check local guides).
