English team to play qualifiers in triples final: Friday, April 7, 2006

The leading English team of Katherine Hawes, Catherine Popple and Jean Baker will meet Queenslanders Barbara Gates, Ann Maree Hardey and Carmen Anderson in the women’s triples final at the Australian Open.

Hawes, Popple and Baker won through to the finals clash defeating the Australian combination of Commonwealth Games triples silver medallists Noi Tucker, Ceri Ann Davies and Victorian Anna Hoogwerf in a tie-breaker.

The English Commonwealth Games bowlers secured the match on the last end of the best-of-three-ends shoot-out 7-10 8-4 2-1.

In the other semi-final, the Queenslanders, who won through the qualifying tournament to gain a spot in the main draw, booked their finals berth overcoming the experienced team of Arleen Jeffery, Willow Fong and Maria Rigby.

In rainy conditions at the Darebin International Sports Centre Gates, Hardey and Anderson won in straight sets 13-5, 11-6.

The women’s triples final will be played today at 10am and broadcast nationally on ABC TV at 12.30pm.
