INAUGURAL OVER 60S WINNER DECIDED

A colourful trio of Western Australians and the boys from Burwood have taken home the inaugural Over 60 Australian Triples Championship trophies.

The event, played as part of the festival of bowls at the ABN AMRO Australian Open, concluded at Darebin International Sports Centre in Melbourne today (23/2).

Western Australian bowlers Peg Currie, Julie Lindsay and Roma Dunn, all from the Dudley Park Bowls Club, lifted the inaugural women’s trophy after a titanic battle with Gordana Baric’s trio.

The match went to the wire with Dunn’s combination – all dressed in colourful polo shirts and khaki shorts in line with Bowls Australia’s new relaxed dress regulations for national events - taking the contest 7-5, 9-11 and 2-1 in a tie-breaker.

Baric, who plays at Mulgrave Country Club was well supported by team mates Pat Whorlow and Bev Elliott, both of Blackburn.

In the men’s final, Burwood District Bowls Club members Terry Rawlings, Bill Wyatt and Barrie Jackett also prevailed in a tie-breaker.

The trio defeated Yarraville/Footscray members Rudolf Reitmaier, Norm Drinkwater and Malcolm Reilly 17-1, 8-13, 2-0
