THE STARS ALIGN FOR SEMI-FINAL MAGIC

A tantalising semi-final showdown between six of the nation’s finest bowlers remains on the cards following today’s third round of the women’s triples at the ABN AMRO Australian Open.

The tournament’s top seeds, featuring World Championships medallists Kelsey Cottrell, Julie Keegan and Claire Duke, romped home during their third round clash against Zdena Spacil, Shirley Lane and Lorraine Moody, as they posted an 11-6, 12-2 victory.

Simultaneously, the Kellie Wrae-led outfit, consisting of New Zealand Open winner Sharon Renshaw and up-and-coming star Sam Shannahan, cruised through their respective third round clash by posting a 12-4, 8-5 win.

As a result, the rival teams are on a collision course in the round of four, provided they can win tonight’s quarter-finals.

But according to Shannahan, who has thrived at the ABN AMRO Australian Open in recent times, that prospect is far from daunting.

“In sets play you’ve always got a chance and anyone can win on the day,” the relaxed teenager said.

Today’s results are the perfect start to what promises to be a big week for the young Victorian, who’ll also compete in the singles and pairs event.

“My aim is to make the final of all disciplines so I guess it’s on track at the moment,” Shannahan said.

While admitting the blustery conditions were proving difficult, she said she was relatively pleased with her overall performance.

“With the wind and the pace of the greens I was still managing to get them close, so that was good.” she said.

While many of the big guns progressed through to the quarter final stage, the third round saw the exit of dual Commonwealth Game’s gold medallist Ahmad Siti Zalina and her team, which was ousted in convincing fashion.
