GLOBITS WINS BATTLE OF THE FORMER CHAMPIONS

Inaugural ABN AMRO Australian Open champion Shane Globits remains on track for a second singles crown after staging a remarkable first set comeback to win though to the third round.

Down 8-2 in the first, Globits stormed back to win the battle of the titans against reigning champion Robert Doody 9-8, 10-5.

“I just wasn’t nailing my weight (in the first set) and then when I got back it, it definitely gave me a boost for the second,” Globits said.

While the Australian squad member was understandingly delighted with his performance, Doody admitted to being shell-shocked at the result after such a promising start.

“I definitely thought I played better than Shane in that first set,” a clearly disappointed Doody said.

“He’s a quality player and to his credit he fought back and got it in the end.

“Instead of looking what shot to play next, I was probably already looking toward the next set.”

Having lost in the men’s triples yesterday, Doody’s ABN AMRO Australian Open campaign is now over.

Meanwhile, the man Doody beat to claim the 2007 crown, Australian squad member Scott Caundle, has also moved through to the third round, but not without a fight.

Having fought back to win the first set 9-7 against young Victorian Brendan McCallum, he dropped the second 0-12, before sealing a 3-1 victory in the tie-break.

In other results, Commonwealth Games and World Championship bronze medalist Ryan Bester is an unexpected casualty from the tournament.

The ABN AMRO Australian Open’s number five seed crashed out in straight sets to Paul Laycock 8-3, 9-2, joining Australian young gun Aron Sherriff on the sidelines.

Bester and Sherriff, who collected bronze and silver respectively during last month’s World Championships in New Zealand, were left to ponder what could have been after being dumped from the tournament during the early rounds.
