BIG GUNS FIRE UP

The 2008 ABN AMRO Australian Open ladies singles is set for a thrilling climax with a host of the sport’s biggest names firing into the quarter-finals.

Commonwealth Games gold medallist Karen Murphy struck an ominous warning to the rest of the field with an easy 8-6, 11-3 victory over 1996 World Champion Carmen Anderson.

“It’s probably the best game of singles I’ve played so far,” Murphy said.

“I knew I had to be up to beat Carmen and was probably surprised to get it so easy.”

Believing she has hit her peak in her past two outings on the green, Murphy was well aware the road ahead is set to be tough one.

“Looking around the quality of players left is absolutely brilliant, so it’s going to be tough,” she said.

“I’ve strung two good games together now, so I’ve got a bit of momentum heading into the quarters.”

While Murphy moved through, fellow Australian squad member Julie Keegan’s campaign came to an end.

Having won the first set against 10-7 against Patty Whorlow, she dropped the second 10-4 and was run over the top of in the tie-break 6-1.

However, the 2008 trophy could well be heading off shore after New Zealand raider Marina Kahn and reigning title holder, Malaysian Ahmad Siti Zalina both moved through.

Kahn proving too strong for Victorian Judy Davey 8-5, 10-3, while Siti Zalina was pushed all the way by Jan Rolph before clinching a 9-2, 2-9, 3-2 victory.
