The road to Delhi: Blazing a trail

Bowlsaustralia.com.au continues its stroll down memory lane ahead of Delhi...

As the road to Delhi continues, bowslaustralia.com.au revisits the past with a look at some of the nation’s finest Commonwealth Games moments.

Since 1930, Australia has collected nine gold, 15 silver and six bronze medals, providing some of the game’s most unforgettable memories in the process.

In part four of the series, we take a look at the 2006 Melbourne Games and the successful partnership of Lynsey Armitage and Karen Murphy, who rode a wave of support to scale the dais in the women’s pairs.

Traditionally the Commonwealth Games have not been a happy hunting ground for Australia.

In the 14 campaigns leading into Melbourne, just six gold had been secured, highlighting the treacherous nature of the game’s marquee event.

Nonetheless, an air of optimism surrounded the Australian contigent some four years ago, and as history will show, rightly so.

In the women’s pairs, Queensland young gun Lynsey Armitage was asked to unite with NSW powerhouse Karen Murphy, who was participating in her third Games.

Having captured bronze in the fours in 1998, and a silver in the singles in 2002, Murphy was desperate to complete the set, but it wouldn’t be easy.

Despite clinching back-to-back Asia Pacific gold medals, a host of heavy hitters had been selected to compete at the Darebin International Sports Centre, handing Australia a tricky draw to navigate their way through to the post-sectional rounds.

"To us bowlers the Commonwealth Games is our Olympics, it’s as high up as you can get in our sport," Armitage said recently.

"Winning the title in 2006 was the best feeling I’ve ever had in my life.

"A home crowd, family, friends, playing alongside my best mate. It was fantastic.

"Now, four years down the track, to have the opportunity to retain the title would be golden."

Having swept through the preliminary rounds with little fuss, dropping just the one set along the way, the post-sectional games were another matter all together.

Facing off against Northern Ireland’s Mary Cameron and Donna McNally, Armitage and Murphy hung on in a tie-breaker before doing likewise against New Zealand’s Khan sisters, Marina and Jan, in the semi-finals.

The victories set up a gold medal clash with Scotland’s Kay Moran and Joyce Lindores, but with the latter chasing her second triumph in the event, having prevailed in 1998 with Margaret Letham, an arm-wrestle was assured.

In the final, however, everything clicked for the Australians.

"When you go four shots down on a nine-end two-bowl game, it's hard to make it up," Lindores said following the match.

"(At one stage) I thought I did well with a shot, but the Australian skip (Murphy) came and played an excellent bowl."

After three attempts, the gold medal was finally Murphy’s.

"KL and Manchester Comm Games finals really seem like a blur to me now," Murphy said.

"There are certainly things I would have done differently now I look back during these finals, but I think losing a gold medal final twice, really made me appreciate a home Games gold in Melbourne.

"I would not change a thing."

With the national anthem blasting through the air, the Australian pair were able to etch their name into history, becoming just the second women’s combination to scale the dais at a Commonwealth Games.

"We all dream of becoming a Commonwealth Games gold medalist and to be able to say that I am one makes me feel extremely proud and special," Armitage said.

"There was so much hype with the media and publicity we got from becoming gold medallists and being part of the most successful bowls team ever in the history of Commonwealth Games. It was pretty exciting living like celebrities for a while.

"Now however, having nearly four years to look back, I realise what a huge accomplishment it is and how special an elite group of people we are to call ourselves Commonwealth Games gold medallists."

Editor’s note: Lynsey Armitage has been selected to defend her pairs’ title at the Delhi Commonwealth Games, leading for NSW’s Natasha Van Eldik.

Defending World Cup champion Leif Selby will meet Canada’s Vincent Mai in SF2...

With Australian teammate Anthony Kiepe awaiting the victor in the final, Selby is just two wins away from becoming the first player to mount a successful title defence, but the Canadian is a fierce opponent who cannot be taken lightly.

Having grown up on the Warilla surface, the world number two will have the support of the home crowd firmly behind him when he continues his tilt at history.

But having survived the repechage, Mai is a fighter and will be doing all he can to ruin Selby’s party.

Jopson claims BCiB QLD Open title

Pine Rivers’ Paul Jopson is the BCiB Queensland Open men's singles champion...

Pine Rivers’ Paul Jopson has scored his second grand prix title of the year after accounting for world number nine Anthony Kiepe in today’s men’s singles final at the BCiB Queensland Open.

Fresh off his victory alongside young guns Ben Twist and Kurt Brown in February’s Australian Open, Jopson defied his underdog tag as he registered a 14-1, 7-8, 4-0 win.

However, there is some solace for the Helensvale ace, with his appearance in today’s final likely to send him to the top of the national rankings, but that would count for little right now.

Playing in his first major tournament since contesting the World Cup final in April, Kiepe accounted for a host of big names en route to the final, but was unable to secure one more win.

During a whirlwind opening set, Jopson claimed 11 straight shots to open the match before Kiepe finally hit the board with a single on the sixth end.

But when Jopson immediately countered, picking up another triple, the first set was gone.

“I knew I had to be at my best,” Jopson said.

“I was just hoping that they would come out of the hand the way they had been and I knew I was going to be in for a tussle and at the end of the day I out drew him which is amazing because he is an awesome draw bowler.

“I don’t know, maybe the sets style of play suits me.”

In the second set, Kiepe finally found his range and started to apply the pressure and when the reigning Australian and Asia Pacific indoor champion forced a tie-breaker, the momentum appeared to be his.

But Jopson weathered the storm and came out fighting, landing a near toucher to secure a single on the opening end of the tie-break and when he drew two more on the second end the championship was all but over.

While Kiepe tried desperately to secure a number, it wasn’t to be as Jopson secured the win of his career.

Click here for end by end scoring of the men’s singles final at the BCiB Queensland Open.

Caption: Pine Rivers’ Paul Jopson has scored his second grand prix title of the year after accounting for world number nine Anthony Kiepe in today’s men’s singles final.

Confessions of a teenage giant slayer

Victoria's Lisa Phillips has captured this year's BCiB Queensland Open...

Teenage giant slayer Lisa Phillips has conceded her heart was in her mouth in the dying moments of the women’s singles final at the $40,000 BCiB Queensland Open.

Despite holding one on the final end of the tie-break, good enough for the championship, the 17-year-old was hoping for some divine intervention as former world champion Carmen Anderson stepped on to the mat.

But there would be no stopping Phillips, who has not put a foot wrong since stepping on the Bribie Island greens rocking her black mohawk and aviators, as the Victorian young gun watched Anderson’s final effort swing wide allowing her to claim her maiden Bowls Australia grand prix crown.

“I’m still shaking, but I’m pretty excited, pretty pumped to get over the line,” Phillips said following her 10-1, 6-8, 2-1 victory.

“I’m still nervous.”

During an incredible run, Phillips had to play a past or present international in every round of the competition, eliminating former Australian representative Di Cunnington in her opening match before doing likewise to world number five and pre-tournament favourite Kelsey Cottrell.

Ironically, Cottrell remains the circuit’s youngest ever singles winner after claiming the Queensland Open in 2007 as a 17-year-old herself, piping Phillips by a matter of weeks.

Nonetheless, the Richmond Union recruit, who hails from Yallourn, rose to the occasion as she also put the sword to current Australian squad member Kelli Wray and former Scottish superstar Kay Moran in the quarter and semi-finals before confronting Anderson in today’s championship decider.

“It’s amazing, just playing against them is a real honour and to beat them it’s just like wow,” Phillips said.

“I just want to keep up my current form and see what the future offers.”

Having represented Australia at under-18 level earlier this year, Phillips is being touted as one of the game’s next stars and joins an impressive list of winners at the Queensland Open which includes Cottrell, world championship gold medallist Claire Duke and Australian under-25 representative Bec Quail.

Click here for end by end scoring of the BCiB Queensland Open women’s singles final.

Caption: Teenage giant slayer Lisa Phillips has been crowned this year’s BCiB Queensland Open singles champion.

Baker boys rise to the occasion

Rob Wild, Alex Murtagh and Sean Baker won this year's BCiB QLD Open

A power packed performance from Rob Wild, Alex Murtagh and Sean Baker has ensured the 2010 BCiB Queensland Open men’s triples crown will remain in the Sunshine State.

During this morning’s final against southern raiders Chris Green, Barrie Lester and Mark Jacobsen, the two-time reigning state champions added yet another title to their growing list as they clinically went about their business to secure a 13-1, 9-6 victory.

With Wild and Murtagh providing a perfect platform, Baker was at his scintillating best as the former Australian under-25 representative gave a crash course in world class driving.

Having dropped just the one set en route to the final, there would be no denying the Queenslanders, who barely put a foot wrong throughout the entire match.

According to Baker, a five-time state champion, this morning’s win has jumped straight to the top of his list.

“We’re a pretty tight knit (unit),” Baker said.

“We’re all good mates, we all love the game, and we clicked well.

“This is probably the pinnacle for us as a triples (combination). Obviously the state titles were very good, but to be on this sort of stage and playing against the caliber of Barrie, Greeny and Jayco it’s just and honour to be out there.

“It was also the first time on TV for me and I’ll never forget it.”

After dropping a single on the opening end of the match, the Queensland trio clicked into overdrive as they rattled off 15 straight shots over nine successive ends to place a vice like grip on the winners’ trophy.

While Jacobsen, fresh off his victory in yesterday’s pairs final, played some big shots to try and haul his team back into the contest, there would be no gold medal on this occasion as Wild, Murtagh and Baker were left to celebrate their victory.

The men's triples title at the BCiB Queensland Open is going down to the wire...

Perennial winners Rob Wild, Alex Murtagh and Sean Baker will chase the BCiB Queensland Open men’s triples’ title tomorrow after advancing to the championship decider.

Having secured back-to-back state titles, the best the Sunshine State has to offer will confront southern raiders Chris Green, Barrie Lester and Mark Jacobsen for the grand prix title.

During this afternoon’s semi-finals, Baker guided his combination to a 9-9, 10-2 victory over Western Australia’s Farley Anderson, Trystan Smallacombe and Neale Griffin, while Jacobsen, fresh off his victory in the pairs, eliminated Delhi representatives Brett Wilkie, Wayne Turley and Mark Casey 7-7, 6-5.

While Jacobsen has secured all the headlines this week following his blistering run at Bribie Island, Wild, Murtagh and Baker, three of the nation’s most promising young talents, have quietly gone about their business and will now contend for their maiden grand prix win.

Standing in their way, however, is the formidable combination of Green, a 2007 fours winner at the Queensland Open, as well as Lester and Jacobsen, both former Australian representatives.

According to Lester, who reached the third round of the singles and the semi-finals of the pairs alongside Green before losing out to his triples’ skip, tomorrow’s match will be a fierce battle between both sides.

“It’s always hard playing the reigning state champions,” Lester said.

“They appear to be a tight outfit, but so are we, so it will all come down to who ever can play the better bowls on the day.

“We’re pretty happy with the way we have played this week, but there’s still a game to go.”

The men’s triples final will commence at 9am on Thursday morning.

Click here for full results from the BCiB Queensland Open.

Caption: Pine Rivers' Alex Murtagh is through to the men's triples final at the BCiB Queensland Open.
